Description
The project seeks to address these challenges by promoting sustainable freshwater management and regenerative agriculture practices. It aims to restore critical freshwater habitats and improve agricultural water efficiency, especially within the cotton sector, by introducing modern irrigation practices that reduce water use and limit chemical runoff. By implementing these methods, the project strives to alleviate some of the basin’s ecological pressures, ensuring cleaner water and healthier ecosystems. The organization will also focus on the conservation of species such as the European eel, whose habitats and migration routes are increasingly threatened. In addition to restoring wetland areas, the project will work with local communities to strengthen their role in sustainable water management, equipping stakeholders with the knowledge and tools needed for long-term ecosystem resilience. By fostering collaboration across agricultural, governmental, and conservation sectors, the project is expected to create a model for managing Turkey’s freshwater resources sustainably. Through this comprehensive approach, the project not only aims to address the immediate environmental threats facing the Büyük Menderes Basin but also seeks to establish best practices that can contribute to sustainable freshwater management in Turkey, ensuring a resilient future for its people, biodiversity, and critical water resources.
