Description

The project seeks to address these issues through a holistic conservation approach. Recognizing the importance of community involvement, the project aims to establish a comprehensive governance and management structure for the wetland, which currently lacks a unified oversight model. By working with local landowners, the Ministry of Environment, and other stakeholders, the project will develop a collaborative framework to ensure the long-term preservation of the wetland.Central to the project’s objectives is improving water resource management. The wetland depends primarily on seasonal rainfall and groundwater inflows, yet recent years have seen increased water scarcity due to agricultural demands and climate variations. To address these challenges, the project will conduct hydrogeological studies, install essential water management structures, and promote sustainable irrigation practices in nearby farms, aiming to preserve the wetland’s ecological water flow and reduce pollution from agricultural runoff. Community engagement and eco-tourism are key pillars of this project. By involving the local community in conservation activities, including youth training programs and support for sustainable business initiatives, the project aims to foster a sense stewardship. The development of an eco-tourism model will position Ammiq as a destination for nature-based tourism, promoting economic benefits and heightened awareness around conservation. The project provides a model for freshwater conservation in Lebanon, addressing urgent environmental challenges and creating a framework for long-term sustainability.
